The response is measured by increase or decreases in sales, returned surveys, or even inquiries to the company. What makes direct marketing so important? Nothing really. Direct marketing is simply the most effective form of marketing. I guess that makes it pretty important. Another form of direct marketing that once was popular but is now infamous is telemarketing. Telemarketing involves a direct marketing company calling at the most inconvenient products and talking about the most irrelevant things. Oh the subjects of discussion are relevant to them, but to you around dinner time not so much. Once upon a time, telemarketing was a highly effective form of direct marketing until the dinner time rendezvous. What made it so effective was the fact that it pretty much put the company on the phone with its customer, joining product and consumer instantly. Ever since the National Do Not Call List, however, telemarketing has lost a good amount of its effectiveness.
